All About Cells!

Hey Grade 8's!

                                                                     Retrieved From

Now that we are moving into our unit on Cells, we will specifically be exploring the theory of cells and the structure and function of both plant and animal cells. In Cell Command, you ill become captain of a "cell ship" embarking and completing a series of exciting missions that bring you throughout the body with your crew! You will begin by operating one station and as you continue to play and build your knowledge of the cell, you will eventually command all the ship's functions (aka the cell's functions).

 Parents,

In this unit students are focusing on the structure and function of cells in plants and animals!  Cell Command will provide a unique, fun, and informative journey in developing a deep understanding of the function of the cell. The game will allow each student to explore the cell and build their knowledge at their own pace and will be accessible at home! This game will allow students to better understand the content in a new and meaningful way!

 Some of the curriculum expectations that are included:

3.1 demonstrate an understanding of the postulates of the cell theory (e.g., the cell is the basic unit of life; all cells come from pre-existing cells; all living things are made up of one or more cells)

3.2 identify structures and organelles in cells, including the nucleus, cell membrane, cell wall, chloroplasts, vacuole, mitochondria, and cytoplasm, and explain the basic functions of each

SimCity!

 Hey Grade 8's!

In the past week we have been exploring the ways in which the economy works! We started with looking at what an economy looks like, the various philosophies behind them, and what makes it all run!

Now it is time to see what YOUR ideal country will look like! What type of economy will you have?  What industries will you include and rely on? You will be able to show this through the creation of your very own SimCity! With a partner, you will work towards building your economy from scratch and discovering what you would being in control! Once this is done, we will have a Mayoral Debate, and vote for the city we would want to live in!

Parents,

SimCity provides students with a hands-on approach to use their skills that we have been developing in class which include problem solving and critical thinking. Integrated within the geography curriculum, students are to explore the different types of economic systems and industrial activities and the factors that influence them. SimCity allows students to do this through their own simulation of their own city, controlling components like taxes, industries, and residential zones. This will lead into discussions about the relation from their own city to the ways in which Canada's economic system works, as well as different countries and communities.

Some of the expectations we will be looking at include:

  • describe the characteristics of different types of economic systems (e.g., traditional, command, market) and explain why most countries, including Canada, have a mixed economy that includes features from more than one systems
  •  explain how the availability of particular economic resources (e.g., quantity and quality of land, labour, capital, entrepreneurial ability) influences the economic success of a region;
